Your Job:
As the Footwear Developer I at Brooks, you will be an integral part of the Footwear Development Team to drive execution of seasonal inline and SMU products through all phases of the product creation cycle. You will develop your skills as you collaborate on a daily basis with other Footwear team members to create and build amazing footwear that runners love. You will be part of the Footwear process, including the execution of new inline styles, handling new color-ups, material updates, SMU product and supporting footwear development through sample management and contributing to process improvement. This role will act as a positive driving force in the product creation process and impacts business results through cost, quality and product performance. In this role you’ll partner closely with more senior members of the Footwear Development team to hone your technical footwear expertise.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead execution of New Upper, SMU, and other projects from creation final confirmation with T1
  • Partner with more senior developers/ engineers on New Tooling projects
  • Own footwear sample management, including receipt and distribution of all samples, sample checking, and communicating updates to all teammates.
  • Oversee and manage multiple projects from Insights gathering to Brief Stage, through Design, Development, Costing, and into Commercialization.
  • Deliver on Brooks Fit, Feel, Ride principles, and goals via an unwavering dedication to always deliver excellence.
  • Plan and execute project development according to the seasonal critical dates that lead to on-time delivery of sales samples and production confirmation.
  • Create and maintain technical packages and Bills of Materials (BOM’s) for assigned projects on a seasonal basis.
  • Effectively communicate with Asia Development team to share product expectations and product details that lead to on-time delivery of samples.
  • Ensure product performance integrity by working with Product Validation teams to determine testing needs/criteria, understand results, and make decisions based on learnings.
  • Ensure product quality by collaborating with Engineering and Quality Assessment teams at all stages of the creation process.
  • Continuously grow knowledge of the product creation and manufacturing process, allowing for contribution of ideas that will enhance product performance.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, new technologies, and consumer needs to ensure that products incorporate the functional needs of our consumers’ demand.
  • Partner with more senior members of the team to support their projects as needed
  • Manage multiple projects at a time through multiple timelines.
  • Continuous learning of Brooks Fit, Feel & Ride manufacturing best practices.
  • Partner with vendors and factories in the manufacturing process with the ability to manage the process in order to advance and achieve new manufacturing techniques which enhance the overall performance of product.
  • Partner with and support Design and Development teams to ensure that designs are manufacturable and meet cost and quality objectives for each product.
  • Understand when to bring in additional support to continue to drive product decisions forward.
  • Critique, adjust, and evaluate technical blueprints (outsole/ midsole/ upper), upper patterns, and materials from a performance, manufacturing, and functional perspective.
  • Participate in Asia development trips, 3 – 4 per year, to work with manufacturers and suppliers on existing and current development projects.
  • Recommend and specify to Product team the material, component, and construction options to meet pricing targets and the product’s functional goals, as well as ensure product performance integrity through product testing (physical and field testing).
  • Initiate and lead meetings with product teams during various phases of development to review, evaluate, update, and ultimately drive the decision-making process that leads to on-time production confirmation and margin goals.
  • Create and build a knowledge base and stay informed about vendor capabilities and performance, factory relationships, quality issues, materials pricing, and lead times.
  • Other projects as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomechanics, Engineering, Kinesiology, Design, or other applicable technical degree; may be substituted with relevant experience
  • 3+ years’ experience in the Athletic Footwear and Apparel, Sporting Goods, or other consumer goods industry
  • 1+ years experience in the product development of athletic footwear desired
  • Desire to work in footwear and learn construction methods, materials, testing & evaluation techniques. Ability to understand how footwear is made and the importance of construction in the part of fit, feel, and ride of performance footwear.
  • Proven ability to drive a decision in a collaborative, cross-functional group without command/ control to meet strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop productive relationships with individuals and teams that are made up of diverse disciplines and cultural backgrounds resulting in effective working relationships across the company
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with and good ability to communicate new ideas, concepts, and functional expertise within project teams and to external stakeholders.
  • Keen attention to detail in planning, organization, and execution of tasks (self and through others), while seeing the big picture with support and understanding how all of the pieces fit together and affect one another.
  • High level of independent work ethic and ability with the instinct to know when to reach out for support.
  • Keen attention to detail in planning, organization, and execution of tasks. Willingness to dive into the details to better understand the “why”.
  • Early ability to anticipate how a decision made can affect our customers, our partners, our products or other departments’ operations and/or morale; “connecting the dots.”

  • Strong computer skills including experience with Illustrator, MS Office software. Flex PLM knowledge is a bonus.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed

Compensation: The pay range for this position, based out of the Brooks Seattle HQ, is $73,515 - $110,272 per year. Base pay offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
