Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

Join the Christiansted National Historic Site team and assist with growing the capacity of the volunteer program in a sustainable, effective, and meaningful manner. The CVA will collaborate on projects to enhance the volunteer and outreach programs at the park, while developing critical skills necessary for their future career success.

Site Description:

\n

Christiansted National Historic Site is the main headquarters for three park units on the island of St. Croix. It commemorates urban colonial development of the Virgin Islands and features 18th and 19th century structures in the heart of downtown Christiansted. Buck Island Reef National Monument totals 19,015 acres comprised of 176-acre uninhabited Buck Island and 18,839 acres of submerged lands with off of the northeast coast of Saint Croix. Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve preserves upland watersheds, mangrove forests, and estuarine and marine environments that support threatened and endangered species. It also contains the Columbus Landing Site, a National Historic Landmark that is the only known site where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on what is now United States territory. Christiansted National Historic Site currently has volunteer cohort of 15 regular year-round volunteers. They are regularly helping with cleanups, education and grant programming involving field trips and classroom visits, and also assist our resources management team with by monitoring sea turtle nests, treatment of corals for Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, and helping with the plant nursery.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Respond to potential volunteer inquiries for information
  • \n
  • Research and suggest strategies to improve volunteer recruitment and retention
  • \n
  • Identify and create new volunteer positions and projects within the park
  • \n

CVA Minimum Requirements:

    \n
  • Guest service
  • \n
  • Excellent research and writing stills
  • \n
  • Strong communication abilities
  • \n
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • \n
  • Time management
  • \n
  • Critical thinking skills
  • \n
  • Taking initiative
  • \n
  • Flexible and adaptability
  • \n
  • Personable, kind, and hardworking
  • \n
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in late March/early April 2024 (date TBD)
  • \n
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • \n
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)
  • \n
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • \n
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.
  • \n
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check
  • \n
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position
  • \n

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience engaging the general public
  • \n
  • Public speaking
  • \n
  • Completion of a post-secondary education program (2 to 4 years)
  • \n
  • Interested in learning about the National Park Service and career opportunities
  • \n

Additional Information:

\n

Driver's license and car preferred, will need a way to get themselves to the park office in downtown Christiansted each day
Schedule includes working on select holidays/weekends
Interdisciplinary job shadow opportunities with other departments can be arranged with CVA interest

Benefits:

  • CVA will receive a weekly stipend of $600
  • \n
  • CVA will receive an additional $150/week in housing allowance, if housing is not provided.
  • \n
  • Limited health care/childcare benefits
  • \n
  • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,895.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program
  • \n
  • $1,200 in professional development funds for training, networking, conferences, and/or travel.

  • Networking opportunities within the National Park Service and partnering organizations

  • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority
  • \n
  • Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered.
