Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to expand institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Creek County Conservation District will host a Working Lands Climate Corps (WLCC) Member. The WLCC will train the next generation of conservation leaders for Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry. The WLCC is a part of the American Climate Corps (ACC), and service members will receive technical skills training, education awards, and career pathway opportunities. WLCC members will receive on-the-ground experience with partners and organizations who conduct programming to support the adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture and Forestry practices and systems.
This WLCC Member will serve the Creek County Conservation District in Bristow, Oklahoma. The WLLC member at the Creek County Conservation District will collaborate closely with district staff and state-level staff stationed in Bristow to implement programs such as State Cost Share, Yard by Yard and the Soil Health Implementation Program (SHIP). This individual will also work to create educational content and events that promote community and environmental stewardship such as helping with the NACD poster contest.
Position Responsibilities will include:
● Assist Conservation District with the implementation of the Yard by Yard program including education and outreach https://www.okconservation.org/yardbyyard
o Certification of Yards
o Attend outreach events
o Distribute educational information for city and town zoning officials
o Convene community stakeholders to discuss the benefits of conservation landscaping
● Attend the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD) Area and State meeting, registration will be comped by OACD
● Attend educational events regarding the Conservation Agriculture Reach Everyone (CARE) program if requested by OACD
● Attend educational events pertaining to conservation and environmental stewardship.
● Assist community partners, by attending meetings, assisting during volunteer events and outreach opportunities.
● Attend and assist in the planning of educational and community events for both the Yard by Yard program and district activities.
● Attend outreach events that promote state level programs as well as district services.
● Work with the district to collect data and perform needs assessments of farmers and landowners in Creek County.
Minimum Requirements:
● Must be able to serve a full-time schedule for the duration of the term.
● Be at least 19 years old at the start of service.
● Have a high school diploma or equivalent or agree to obtain a high school diploma prior to using the earned education award.
● Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; and
● Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria.
● Possess a state-issued driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
● Bachelor’s or some college experience related to the disciplines of soil conservation, environmental science, geology, horticulture, agriculture, natural resources, science communication or a related field.
● Strong interpersonal communication skills for consensus building and professional partner development.
● Ability to publicly speak.
● Some experience with public outreach and marketing and educational material development.
● Self-motivated and self-directed. Ability to work alone or with others in a team environment with minimum supervision. Flexibility to perform a variety of duties and deal with unforeseen events.
● Experience working with diverse communities.
● Event planning and workshop development experience
● Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend, or evening hours, travel out of town, sometimes overnight.
