Title: Temporary Field Supervisor

Starting Salary Range: $20/hr, paid bi-weekly

Location: Durham, North Carolina

Status: Temporary, up to 40 hours per week

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Conservation Corps North Carolina:

The mission of Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) is to empower young adults through meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina’s land and water and creates healthy communities.

CCNC is a program of Conservation Legacy that partners with public land managers in North Carolina to engage motivated young adults (ages 18-30) to complete challenging and impactful conservation service projects throughout the region. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazard fuel reduction, and ecological restoration. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs.

Projects take place across North Carolina, including work with the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, State Parks, and other land managers. During their time in the field, CCNC field crews camp overnight and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, performing heavy manual labor related to environmental conservation and restoration projects. These hands-on projects include visitor access improvements, trail construction and maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive species treatments, historic restoration, disaster relief, and much more. Most projects require hiking out to remote work sites for the day with tools, equipment, and day pack.

Position Summary: This is a position that will find itself out in the field with crews and working on mission critical equipment in various capacities. It’s a fun, versatile position that will interact with crews and get to work on many amazing conservation projects all across the state of North Carolina!

The Field Supervisor’s primary roles are to provide field and logistical support to our field staff and seasonal conservation crews, saw crews, fire crews, active-duty crews and youth crews by offering technical assistance, morale support, and ensuring program integrity through policy enforcement and positive mentoring. The Field Supervisor will assist with program logistics and planning, as well as facilitating staff trainings. Field Supervisors will support adult, youth, saw, vegetation management, and fire crews, as needed. The majority of the Field Supervisor position will be spent in the field which will include camping overnight, driving to multiple work sites across the entire state of North Carolina, and working at CCNC’s operations office to assist with equipment repairs, crew equipment needs, and logistics

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:

Training:

Help to develop and implement crew leader trainings including technical work, protocols, leadership and facilitation skills. This position will be a role model and mentor throughout training and field season to crew members, assistant crew leaders and crew leaders.

Field Support:

This position will conduct regular visits to crews, project partners and work sites. It will be essential to communicate and debrief with crew leaders and corps members during field visits as well as manage on-the-ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance as needed. This position will also oversee project management in front country and remote working locations, including enforcing all CCNC and partner policies and procedures. It will also require providing encouragement, guidelines, and supervision to crew leaders throughout their tenure as well as filling in for Staff Crew Leaders when they are unable to be in the field.

Supervision:

Collaborate with the Program Director and Program Coordinator(s) to train, mentor, and supervise a broad scope of corps members and crew leaders across CCNC programs.

Programming:

This position will assist with planning, scheduling, and implementing crew projects, as well as develop and coordinate of risk management policies. It will also be required to facilitate corps member development in the field.

Tools, Equipment, Gear:

This position will plan and help program staff with project logistics, including assisting the Program Coordinator(s) and Program Director in maintaining a clean and efficient base of operations. It will be required to work within an established program budget regarding necessary purchases. Additional responsibilities include; helping maintain vehicles and trailers, develop and implement strategies to improve vehicle, and tool usage safety and care.

Risk Management and Emergencies:

The Field Supervisor will be one of the first staff responders for crew emergencies and support and, therefore, must be readily available for trips into the field and comfortable with an ever-shifting work schedule. They may help prepare any forms and instruments for emergency planning and use, as well as audit programs for risk management gaps and provide relevant feedback to staff.

General Administration and Partnerships:

This position will help maintain accurate reporting of all necessary information and complete program reports, project, program, and crew leader evaluations throughout the season. They also may be assisting with develop and maintenance of partnerships with community and project partners.

Physical Requirements:

Some positions may require periodic overnight travel, non-traditional work hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use program-specific tools and a range of technology on an infrequent or frequent basis. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Ability to safely drive an organizational vehicle may also be required for some positions.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Must hold current advanced medical certification (Wilderness First Aid or above) with CPR/AED, or willingness to receive certification early in the season

· Exhibits the ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a variety of populations, including those underrepresented at our organization and those of BIPOC communities.

· Minimum of 1 years of experience in youth development or relevant conservation field

· Experience with mentoring diverse groups of individuals to achieve common goals.

· Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment

· The ability to carry out assigned work independently or with minimal supervision

· The ability to communicate effectively, manage complexity cultivate innovation, drive and influence results of oneself and others.

· Ability to work well with others and to seek assistance when needed to carry out assignments.

· Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs and applications, or similar platforms.

· Ability to keep others, in remote locations, accountable to expectations.

· Valid Driver’s License and Insurable Driving Record

· Must be able to pass the organization’s criminal history check requirements.

· Experience leading conservation programs, members or administrative systems.

· Leadership experience with a conservation or youth corps or similar program

· Experience and desire in working with youth and young adults

· Strong skill level in at least one or more of the following areas: rock and timber construction, new trail construction, trail maintenance, chainsaw operation and maintenance, crosscut use and maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing and ecological restoration projects

· Experience with backpacking, wilderness living and travel, LNT and outdoor leadership

Preferred Qualifications or strong desire to grow in the following:

· Experience with CCNC or other conservation corps or youth corps

· Have a friendly, approachable disposition

· Experience teaching, facilitation, and team-building experience with diverse groups of people

· Strong conflict resolution skills

· Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference
