\n

The Great Basin Institute, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or seeking to advance their academic standing. In partnership with Colonial National Historical Park (COLO), GBI seeks to hire one Archives Technician.

The Archives Technician will have experience working with archival collections and records management. The Technician will assist with survey, evaluation and organization of all resource management records, archeological, archival and manuscript collections with the records management guideline. The project will also consolidate and rehouse collections that are currently scattered in several locations. The technician is intended to be able to work as part of a team following the lead of the archivist and conservator.

This position requires the incumbent to have substantial practical and technical knowledge of archival methods, procedures, and technology, and the skill to apply that knowledge with only general supervision to solve practical problems in a wide range of functions in the administration of historic documents. Some examples of special experience needed are archival collection processing and arranging, registration, cataloging, accessioning, book and paper preservation, collections research and other related activities.  Primary duties are outlined and include, but may not be limited to, the following:

Collections Care:

\n

  • Catalogs and indexes a large variety of materials. Examines for content and identifies and selects significant concepts and characteristics to be recorded for use in automated retrieval.
  • \n
  • Ensures proper maintenance, storage, control, and record management of materials.
  • \n
  • Provides proper storage for historic documents. Monitors climate control systems and prepares proper folders, sleeves, boxes, and other physical housing to assure maximum preservation, organizational integrity, and accessibility for use.
  • \n
  • Assures preservation of historic document collections.
  • \n
  • Recognizes the need for further preservation and/or conservation work and reports such needs to a higher-level specialist.
  • \n
  • Reviews the collections for mold, vermin, and insects; if necessary, arranges for freezing or isolation of the collections; performs cleaning; and rehouses the collection and labels all boxes and folders.
  • \n
  • Assists with producing finding aids.
  • \n

Research:

  • Assist with Research collection provenance, original order, series components, dates, document formats, processes, creators, authenticity, topical content data, legal status, and legal validity of access restrictions and ownership history. Uses this information to update, correct, or add records into the NPS collections management database, put in the archive module and transfer to the cultural resource module.

  • Performs difficult searching duties based on correspondence and telephone requests from the NPS and public. Determines where to search for hard-to-find information. Uses finding aids, automated databases, and other reference tools.

Communication:

  • Communicates with park staff, local and regional staff using both electronic and telephone methods such as email, Teams, phone calls, to help solve accession and cataloging discrepancies.
  • \n
  • Communicates with the conservator any relevant project information in a timely manner.

  • Communicates with vendors to obtain quotes for supplies and services.
  • \n

Location:
Colonial National Historical Park (NHP) administers two of the most historically significant sites in English North America. Historic Jamestowne, the first permanent English settlement in North America in 1607 and Yorktown Battlefield, the final major battle of the American Revolutionary War in 1781. These two sites represent the beginning and end of English colonial America. Situated on the Virginia Peninsula, these sites are connected by the 23-mile scenic Colonial Parkway.

Colonial NHP also includes Green Spring, the 17th century plantation home of Virginia's colonial governor, Sir William Berkeley, and the Cape Henry Memorial, which marks the approximate site of the first landing of the Jamestown colonists on the Atlantic Coast in April of 1607. Colonial NHP has a variety of natural resources including extensive wetlands, forest, fields, shorelines, and streams, as well as rare, threatened, and endangered plants and animals. Compensation and Benefits:
• Wage: $22.65 hourly
• Paid personal leave, sick leave, and federal holidays

Job Qualifications:

  • Educational experience with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree focused on library science, archival studies, records management or a closely related field; applicants with advanced degrees are highly encouraged to apply;
  • \n
  • Experience in collections management to include registration, cataloging, accessioning, research, preservation, restoration, housing, and conservation of archival collections;
  • \n
  • Knowledge of laws and legal precedents in relation to the management, use, and distribution of information, such as copyright, state and federal privacy and publicity legislation, Freedom of Information Act, etc., and the effect of related legislation on access to specific information.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of arrangement and description according to archival principles;
  • \n
  • Knowledge and experience with records, information management, and digital materials management;
  • \n
  • Knowledge of the cultural resources and disciplines represented in the park collections of the Mid-Atlantic, such as history, archeology, cultural anthropology, historic and cultural landscape, biology, geology, legislation and administration;
  • \n
  • Skill in arranging and describing simple archival collections following the principles of original order and provenance.
  • \n
  • Skill in producing a simple folder list, index, and finding aids for relatively uncomplicated archival collections.
  • \n

  • Knowledge of database management, word processing, and specialized software programs essential to archival description, management, and reference.

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel;

  • Intermediate or higher skill using Microsoft and/or Google suite, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;
