OSU-Cascades invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month fixed-term Instructor position in Outdoor Products at Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend, Oregon.

The incumbent performs teaching and service in the area of Outdoor Products. This position has an opportunity to cover essential areas of our program.

OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon, is a branch campus of Oregon State University. Established in 2001, the university currently enrolls more than 1,300 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. The campus expanded to a four-year university in 2015 and opened its new campus in 2016. The branch campus has ambitious enrollment goals to reach 3,000 to 5,000 students. OSU-Cascades is engaged in building a culturally diverse and community-centric educational environment.

Position Duties

80% – Student Related Activities: Student related activities include teaching courses in support of the Outdoor Products program at OSU-Cascades. Develop and teach courses in the OSU-Cascades curriculum. Other duties that fall under Student Related Activities can include program coordinator, mentoring, internship/experiential education oversight, internship coordination, program review. Percentage of commitment (FTE) among these activities is evaluated and adjusted as needed.

10% – Maintaining Currency: Engaging in scholarly and/or professional development activities that will support teaching, maintain professional engagement and mastery and provide recognition for both the faculty member and the OSU-Cascades organization.

10% – Service: Included in Service is meaningful participation related to OSU-Cascades, the Central Oregon Community, and appropriate professional societies and/or community organizations, and committee work outside of the outdoor products program.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in engineering, industrial design, sustainability, alternative materials, or related field.

Experience teaching in a college or university setting.

Evidence of effective teaching.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Familiarity with successful “front-end” new product development techniques including unlocking consumer insights, material/product/manufacturing/delivery innovation, design-thinking, human factors/industrial design, and/or soft goods design.

Experience with how brands select materials and suppliers with an eye on the environment and sustainability.

Knowledge of circular economy trends and how brands and the industry are considering environmental impact.

Experience supporting experiential learning opportunities

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

PhD in engineering, design, or a related field.

Knowledge of policy influence work within the outdoor industry (Outdoor Industry

Association/Outdoor Foundation or equivalent).

Demonstrated track record of collaboration with industry partners.

Demonstrated ability in the art of effective storytelling.
