As part of our Materials Team, your role as a Trim Developer will require knowledge to carry out various aspects of research, design, development, and commercialization within the trim category. This position will involve working closely with trim suppliers and Design and Development partners to ensure practical, functional, and sustainable trim execution from concept stage to production in a timely manner, delivering quality trims meeting REI Co-op’s quality specifications.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Ability to lead multiple projects from brief stage through design, development, and start of production.
  • Display an in-depth knowledge of trims including design, development, and manufacturing processes with the ability to manipulate and improve the process as needed to enhance the overall performance of product.
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure total trim package meets business and end use requirements including performance, aesthetic, sustainability direction, and cost.
  • Communicate with trim suppliers on new trim needs and provide feedback for new design submits to ensure sample execution and production readiness.
  • Provide technical expertise and feedback when evaluating design concepts and prototypes from a performance, manufacturing, and functional perspective.
  • Display knowledge in raw materials and technical expertise.
  • Proactively manage projects, including all issues surrounding them and reach across multiple teams to resolve any issues.
  • Ability to record processes for both internal and external partners to ensure clarity regarding ways of working and roles and responsibilities.
  • Serve as main point of contact for suppliers to create strong and meaningful business relationships through active engagement including supplier visits, business updates, problem solving, and day-to-day communication.
  • Integrate sustainability goals into every aspect of trim development and execution.
  • Plan and execute trim development according to seasonal calendars and critical dates that lead to on-time delivery of samples and production confirmation.


  • 3+ years’ experience in product/trim development of outdoor apparel / product including product specification, technical illustration, or design with a focus on functional 3D parts
  • Knowledge of product development and manufacturing experience
  • Experience carrying a design idea through from concept to production against a timeline
  • Knowledge of high-performance features and the functional aspects of performance apparel/gear.
  • Working knowledge of global trim sourcing trends and strategy
  • Current computer hardware and software proficiency - MS Office suite; Outlook, Word, Excel, etc..
  • Mastered specification documentation, technical illustration - Adobe Illustrator

Pay Range

$72,900.00 - $100,800.00 per year
