What you will be doing:
The Packaging Development Manager in Beauty is responsible for the driving the development of all packaging innovation, sourcing, and functionality for Helen of Troy's liquid beauty products. This role requires a deep knowledge of cosmetic/ personal care packaging, industry packaging trends, with a keen eye on sustainability and will manage packaging development across all liquids for beauty from concept, line trials and launch collaborating closely with product development, creative and design to ensure on time innovation in packaging designs.
Lead the development efforts in packaging, both primary and secondary to support new product launches, rebranding efforts, ensuring functionality with the formula and components are meet lead times and cost targets.
Drives packaging innovation that entices a consumer to pick up the product on the shelf, that fit within the brand profile and meet product innovation objectives fulfilling the pipeline across the beauty brands (Drybar, Hot Tools, Curlsmith). Maintains a strong brand focus keeping the customer top of mind, addressing consumer needs and ensures product packaging experience and uniqueness are delivered upon, with the alignment of product development to ensure the formula and packaging together meet innovation strategy.
Has a constant eye on sustainability, innovation, packaging trends, always curious and looking for unique packaging solutions and technologies to support innovation.
Overseas the daily functions of packaging development, builds competitive analysis, builds packaging brief, and determines sizing based off competitive analysis that meet the pricing target, timing, and delivery functionality. Creates COG’s sheets for margin and MSRP analysis and alignment with product development and marketing. Works with outside vendors, supervising timely launches, signs off on specs.
Sourcing components from vendors all over the world, responsible for communicating packaging options from different vendors that meet cost targets, moqs, and launch achievements and demonstrates excellent follow-up skills to meet overall timelines.
Ensures all packaging is designed and executed to meet ship dates, tests, and meets aesthetics standards of prestige beauty brands. Works closely with design and creative teams on dyelines, ensuring pps samples are approved and final artwork on time ensuring timelines are met.
Manages all packaging testing for formulation application and functionality approvals, as well as line trials and production are successful and consistent, working together with the packaging engineer ensuring timelines are met.
Partners closely with supply chain managing relationships in tandem with vendors, proactively identify issues, resolves timeline impacts, anticipates beauty needs against timelines objectives and keeps multi-functional team informed.
Manages outside vendors, sourcing, working on different projects at once across several brands, showcasing adaptability and efficient organizing skills.
Manages IP, protecting owned rights and tooling
Skills needed to be successful in this role:
Strong attention to detail and proven problem-solving ability, and can manage multiple projects at once, switching between projects without sacrificing quality and accuracy
Proactive and self-motivated individual with a passion for packaging components in beauty, staying up to date with industry trends
Strong time management skills and organizational capabilities with excellent follow up
Ability to diagnose and resolve challenges in packaging development
Exceptional negotiating and communication skills and a curious, collaborative mindset
5+ years in packaging development in the beauty/personal care industry
Deep understanding of components for beauty products
Familiarity with global packaging regulations and beauty industry standards
Proven track record in managing large-scale projects from concept to launch
Experience in sourcing, developing and testing scale up to production cosmetics packaging
Positive relationships with vendors globally
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
30-50% travel – both domestic and international
Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
