Program Summary:

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).

Position Summary: The Field Supervisor’s primary roles is to provide field, social-emotional, and logistical support to up to 15 seasonal ecological monitoring crews by offering technical assistance, morale support and ensuring program integrity through policy enforcement and positive mentoring. The Field Supervisor will assist with planning and facilitating crew lead and member training. This position is heavily field based with non-field time spent on planning and administrative duties to support the program and future field visits.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:


Help develop and implement crew leader and member training for the Ecological Monitoring program throughout the spring, including technical work, protocols, leadership and facilitation skills. Be a role model and mentor throughout training and field season, especially for Crew Leaders. Attend BLM AIM training sessions to understand the methods used by field crews.

Field Support:

Conduct regular overnight visits to crews, project partners, and work sites throughout New Mexico, Southwest Colorado, and Southeast Utah. Once the training and field season commences, work weeks are typically four 10-hour days spent traveling to crews, supporting operations, and follow-up involving debriefs and administrative tasks. While traveling all food and accommodations, mostly camping, are covered as work expenses. “Eight on, six off” work weeks are also possible.

The field supervisor will conduct visits to different crews each week, some of which they may not have met prior to the visit emphasizing the need for strong interpersonal skills.

Communicate and debrief with crew leaders and corps members during field visits. Liaise between field and office personnel and provide remote follow-up check-ins after field visits. Manage on-the-ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance as needed. Support and advise project management in front country and remote working locations. Enforce all SCC and agency policies and procedures. Provide encouragement, guidelines, and supervision to crew leaders throughout their tenure. May fill in for vacant crew leader positions as necessary. This role is granted significant autonomy in designing their field visits and travel arrangements. The field supervisor takes charge of crafting their schedule, proactively connecting with crews beforehand to guarantee seamless logistical arrangements.


Assist with planning, scheduling, and implementing crew projects. Assist with development and coordination of risk management policies. Facilitate corps member development in the field. This position involves collaborating closely with the AIM manager and coordinator. The position allows for collaboration with AIM program staff to gain a deeper understanding of how the program runs from year to year.

Tools, Equipment, Gear:

Assist logistics staff with equipment preparation pertinent to the AIM program. This will include the inventory and assessment of up to 15 crew camping equipment caches. The Field Supervisor will be involved in the distribution and tracking of equipment to crews and the training that comes along with the equipment's care and usage.

Risk Management and Emergencies:

The Field Supervisor will be one of the first staff responders for crew emergencies and support and, therefore, must be readily available for trips into the field and comfortable with an ever-shifting work schedule. May help prepare any forms and instruments for emergency planning and use. Will audit programs for risk management gaps and provide relevant feedback to staff.

General Administration and Partnerships:

Help maintain accurate reporting of all necessary information and complete program reports, project, program, and crew leader evaluations throughout the season. Help develop and maintain relationships with community and project partners.

Physical Requirements:

Some positions may require periodic overnight travel, non-traditional work hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use program-specific tools and a range of technology on an infrequent or frequent basis. Ability to hike up to 10 miles in a day. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Ability to safely drive an organizational vehicle to locations up to nine hours from the office will be required for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must hold current advanced medical certification (WFR or above) with CPR/AED, or receive certification prior to start date. (SCC will reimburse $150 for WFR course)

  • Experience implementing science and data collection principles

  • Education or experience with plant identification, taxonomy, and specimen collection

  • Can effectively work and mentor diverse teams from a variety of populations, including those underrepresented at our organization and those of BIPOC communities.

  • Minimum of one cumulative year of experience as a leader of peers.

  • High level of skill in at least one of the following: conflict resolution, facilitation, and teaching

  • Strong logistical, organizational, communication skills

  • Ability to use emotional intelligence and decision-making skills to a high degree

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment

  • Able to complete assigned work independently or with minimal supervision as well as working well with others and to seek assistance when needed to carry out assignments.

  • Able to foster innovation to help shape this position for future years

  • Must be able to pass the organization’s criminal history check requirements.

  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurable Driving Record

  • Experience driving four-wheel drive off-highway or navigating off-highway obstacles

  • Able to travel extensively throughout the southwest including areas in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

  • Experienced in spending multiple days in remote areas, wilderness living and travel, and/or outdoor leadership with the ability to keep others accountable to expectations

  • Understanding of Leave No Trace principles

  • Familiar with Microsoft Office programs and applications, or similar platforms.

  • Proficient in phone and email communications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in vegetation or rangeland health assessments, botanical inventory, or standardized ecological monitoring, especially Assessment, Inventory, & Monitoring (AIM) methodology

  • College graduate with coursework in ecology, botany, range science, soil science, wildlife biology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or a related field

  • Experience with SCC or other conservation or youth corps

  • Experience teaching, facilitation, and team-building experience with diverse groups of people

  • Experience working on a field-based team collecting scientific data or working toward conservation goals

  • Familiar with ArcGIS data collection apps such as Field Maps and Arc Collector

  • Experience with soil science and horizons characterization

  • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference
